Because The Good Lord is Holy and His Timing is Near. We as Christians must live in amidst of all of our loved ones here on earth as though they are secondary in comparison against the Glory the Holy Triune Eternal Lord that we are preparing to be re-united with.
Now, they are not irrelevant in terms of being worthless and of no inherent value that we have not been called to witness to them, share God’s word and truth with them and love them under His Banner – we have been called to love them. But we have not been called to idolise them, worship them and even compare or merit them as created beings anywhere the glory and all-sufficiency of the Creator Himself.
1 Corinthians 7.29 says of those believers who are married here on the earth to remember that “because time is short; LET THOSE WHO HAVE WIVES LIVE AS THOUGH THEY HAD NONE and THOSE WHO MOURN AS THOUGH THEY WERE NOT MOURNING… This is a powerful message as it encourages and strongly affirms to Christians who are joyfully married to be reminded that Christ is the greatest Joy not their partner. So they should live as though their whole life. Their greatest Joy is not the gift that God has given them in their partners: but GOD HIMSELF. We as Christians must not be a stumbling block onto other believers and the outside world to make them believe that Christians are all lovey dovey and purely saturated with love and fierce worship of their spouse.
It should be Christ only and Christ alone that we gain strength to face the day and love our spouse. It is not the ability of Christian man to love to his wife that proves that he is Christian; it is rather the revelation of God’s Love that allows the Christian man to love his wife. It is not the ability of a Christian woman to be merciful with her husband that illustrates her faith in God – it is rather the revelation of God’s Mercies in Christ Jesus that allows her to be merciful.
Furthermore; this verse is also an encouragement to Christians who are not married. Those who don’t have a wife or husband or anybody in this life that are MOURNING to live as though they are not mourning. This is because once again. It is all about JESUS CHRIST. To be moulded in His Image and to prepare to be re-united with Him.
Married Christians: do not worship the created being ahead the creator himself.
It’s not couples living as though they are not married that this scripture is talking about. It is talking about couples even though they are married that they are to be fiercely committed to serving and being moulded in the image of Christ. Couples that seek for Christ to be glorified in their relationship outside bode well.
Once again: to live as though one is not married doesn’t mean to neglect your Christian duties to your partner or family. It means to be both and home and in public dedicated to your first Love: JESUS CHRIST
Matthew Poole’s commentary says this about the verse is a handful:
Prayer: << Lord; May a love for you be at the centre of everything that I do and everyone that I meet >>
