I overheard a conversation amongst some of the barbers in a hair salon and barber in Canning Town, East London two years ago. They were talking about colonialism and influences of British Colonialism and Imperialism across the caribbean and Africa – a rather heated topic between them and a christian woman amongst them – my hairdresser. Yep! My hairdresser (when my hair was rather lengthy and afro-ish) – she did a good job on the mini locs haha! Anyways – the old has gone and i’m a bit less trendy now – but I was silent during the time and this lead me to feel really bad when I went home as I should have butted in and spoke and supported my christian sister who became the sole figure of their anger as they came with all this: CHRISTIANITY IS FROM THE WHITE MAN – YOU A SELLOUT BEING A BLACK WOMAN AND A CHRISTIAN WOMAN! Nevertheless – this lady (who I’ll call Denise) held her ground – I was greatly encouraged.
To cut the long story short – I produced a hand written letter and shared it with her apologising for my silence and encouraging her in the faith! I have also decided to share it with you guys here – hope it can be a blessing to you! God Bless
In direct response to the conversation I heard at the salon some months between you and what appears to be a good brother of yours about ‘Afro-Renaissance’ and how ‘Christianity was brought by white people to the Caribbean and black people’ to keep them mentally as slaves and subjects; this is a popular yet mistaken view amongst Black British public. The idea that many within our community have; that the trans-Atlantic slave trade was the worst slavery-trade to take place on the continent is rather illiterate and staggeringly untrue.
I was before becoming a believer a keen and deep reader of Ashra Kwesi, Kemet, African Freemasonry and Melanin Nubianism – what I mean by this is that before becoming a Christian; I believed ‘knowledge of my ancestral heritage and African culture’ makes me who I am. But by God’s Grace, He revealed to me the state of the sinful human being I am and caused me to bow my knee and repent and put my faith and trust in Him. The bible says in the book of Romans 3.23 that ‘all have fallen short of the glory of God’ – this in lay mans terms means ‘all men and all women at their very best are hell-deserving sinners’. We are all at our very best deserving of hell and God’s wrath; but praise be to God that whilst we were yet sinners Christ died and rose again.
Linking this with my opening paragraph – Because we (human beings) are all depraved, all fallen, all hell bound and eternally hell deserving; because we are sinful – our anger is sinful. In other words; our anger proves how depraved and vain we are. As human beings – we pick and choose what offends us to suit our own worldview; we pick and choose when to get angry; we pick and choose who we defend; we pick and choose what offends us, we pick and choose why we get angry and who we get angry with – we even pick and choose what historical atrocities we want to ‘idolize’ to suit our own worldview.
For example; the remembrance of the holocaust (for Jews) is important for this community; as they use it as an example to highlight how ‘they’ (Nazi Germany) were a wicked people. Another example; the Gaza and Palestinian conflict is Israel along with the 2003 War in Iraq is often used by Muslims as a clear example of how ‘they’ (America along with it’s allies in Europe) are a ‘wicked and evil’ race inflicting war and evil upon an innocent people. Another example; black people in Europe and America will use the trans-Atlantic slave trade as a clear example of how ‘they’ (British Slave Masters) are a wicked and terrible race who colonially enslaved the entire African continent out of it’s goods and resources and so on. In simple English; we as human beings have been taught to blame others for the sin and depravity that we face in this world. And within our community; we are no different. The Arab Slave Trade in Africa, which has lasted 1400 years, has killed more than double of the reported 70 – 90 million black Africans affected by the Western trans-Atlantic slave trade on the continent and yet nothing is mentioned about this within our community. Now don’t get me wrong – the answer is not that the Arab slave trade (which still continues to this very day along east and north and north west Africa) was worse but that all mankind have fallen short as the bible makes clear in Romans 3:23. All are sinful, not some.
Hell deserving sinners that see themselves as victims will blame – but hell deserving sinners who by God’s Grace see themselves as sinners will repent. Ask the other thief at the cross in Luke 23:39-43.
In the book of Exodus; when the Israelites had left Egypt and went out into the wilderness; they turned the living and true God – the God who is Eternally Sovereign and Spirit into a false representation (Exodus 32:1-6) and said He is not to be created by any imagination any man made object or representation – they (the Israelites) did just that – they created a golden calf. The same thing has happened today; with images of white Jesus, statues of Mary, book of Mormons and other religious codes, chains, scents, holy waters and so on – man has ‘created’ images, idols and false representations of the living Eternal and Holy Triune God.
So your friend at the shop (who was mentioning some of these things at the shop) is right about this to some extent. He is right that history shows how men have re-created images and/or perceptions of Jesus and the Eternal Father. However; the reality is because we as human beings are fallen; one of the strategies of Satan is make us argue about things that do not matter. The masses must be engaged with issues that in the context of eternity are irrelevant. To be a Christian means to be in a daily fight to be content in what God has done for us at the cross.
If you don’t have the one thing; everything else matters. But if you have the one thing – nothing matters.
And the one thing that matters is this: CHRIST DIED FOR ME AND I AM FORGIVEN. The wrath of God, which was destined for all men, fell upon Jesus Christ. God forgave us of our sins in Christ – and that is all that matters. 1 Peter 2:24 says ‘HE HIMSELF BORE OUR SINS IN HIS BODY ON THE TREE, THAT WE MIGHT SIN AND LIVE TO RIGHTEOUSNESS – BY HIS WOUNDS YOU HAVE BEEN HEALED’.
Christians have to be very careful of the several false and prosperity gospel teaching that are out there in the world. The best that God can ever give us is himself. The modern prosperity teaching says ‘Know Jesus and have your best life now!’ (based of Joel Osteen’s Best Selling Books ‘Purpose Driven Life’ & ‘Best Life Now’) but the historical and biblical Christian gospel teaches us ‘Repent unto Jesus had have your best life then’ when we are re-united with our saviour. It can be fair to say that ‘Best Life Now’ believers are on the wide road that leads to destruction – because the best that life has to offer is here on earth (which means one is going to hell afterwards). But the true repenting believer who is growing in the understanding of God’s Majestic Holiness in Christ Jesus and has a growing desire to walk in the image of Christ and be united with Christ (2 Cor 5.8) in heaven will not believe ‘best life now’ but ‘Best Life Then’ as the Book of Revelation reveals that the Holiness of The Eternal King on the Throne alone is worthy of eternal praise.
Do (in your own time) go through the beatitudes in Matthew 5:2-12 about what it means to be truly blessed (from a biblical perspective) along with the story of the woman with the issue of blood who touched the end of Jesus’ garment and was made whole in Luke 7.47. Indeed just one glance, one fraction of a biblical revelation, one drop in the ocean’s worth of an understanding of God’s Love for us in Christ will destroy everything we have ever known about love in a fallen world and open us up to the living waters of His Grace.
Hope this letter has been an encouragement to you. Do let me know if you have any questions regarding this matter.
God Bless you and the family.
