#Gafartawa in Hausa means ‘Forgiveness’ – The one that has been ‘forgiven much loveth much; but the one has forgiven little loveth little’ (Luke 7:47). It is not our ability to love and forgive that proves that we are christians; it is rather the revelation of who Christ is that allows us to love and forgive – Remain blessed in the Lord.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of God. Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:3-5)
Another way to describe the beatitudes in Matthew Chapter 5 simply is: Blessed are the Emptied. “Happy are the Poor in Spirit, Happy are the mourners, Happy are the meek.”
So what kind of a God is this? What Kind of a Messiah is this talking? And What kind of a crowd is he going to collect? A weak, pathetic and low bunch of ‘mourning and poor in spirit people’. Yep! as one theologian best put it: the doors to the kingdom of God are so low – that only those who can crawl will enter. When God saves a soul; he or she doesn’t look like an incredible piece of fine art work; but looks like a shattered glass or window glued back together again.
Jesus Christ didn’t meet the expectations of many community in those days. The Social Activists, The Political Activists, The Mystics, The High Flying and Wealthy ‘He was despised and we esteemed him not’ (Isaiah 53:2-3). “Away with this man – release us Barabbas!’ (Luke 23:18) cried out the masses. To the proud and to those who thought highly of themselves and to those who world evolved around themselves and their feelings – he appeared a nobody; yet to the lowly and self-recognising of their own depravity – He is the Crucified Messiah and remains the Living Lord.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO MOURN?
ONE WHO HAS A DEEP BROKENNESS FOR THEIR SIN IN THEIR LIFE
Mourning means a sensitivity to sin; are you deeply offended by:
- Your Own Sin – DO YOU RECOGNISE YOUR SIN? Happy are the Sad, (Luke 15:21) The prodigal son said: ‘Father I have sinned against heaven and you, no longer am I worthy to be called your son’
- The sin of the world around you (Psalm 94)- BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN OVER SOCIETAL EVIL BECAUSE IT CAUSES THEM TO PRAY AND WORK FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD (Gary Leon Ridgeway)
- How your sin offends God – are you more offended that people are calling it a sin than you are offended that the sin offends God? David said: “Against you, you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight…” ‘Worldly sorrow’ encourages us to put the take out the blame of sin upon ourselves or on others but ‘Godly sorrow’ causes us to get on our knees and yell to God in anguish and repentance – the very beginning attitude of the beatitudes
Now the world says ‘Blessed are those with healthy esteem and an optimistic view of mankind.’ but Jesus said ‘Blessed are those who mourn over their fallenness and the fallenness of their world’.
Why is it Necessary to Mourn?
ONE: (GOD COMMANDS US TO) IT IS THE STATE THE GOD DESIRES US TO COME TO HIM
Mourning over our sin produces a godly sorrow. We must mourn and mourn enough – so as to take our eyes of ourselves and put our trust in Jesus Christ.
DID YOU KNOW THAT THE ABILITY TO CRY IS A GIFT FROM GOD?
Eccles 7: 2 – Better to go to a house of mourning than a house of feasting
Proverbs 10:18 – He who conceals his hatred has lying lips
Eccles 3:4 – A time to weep, laugh, mourn and dance
TWO: WE SHALL BE COMFORTED
Convinced via the Holy Spirit (John 14.26) of the sinful world we live in, righteousness and judgement
People are only going to be overpowered by the wonder of salvation to the degree that they are overpowered by the terrible reality of their sin and the condemnation coming against them. Indeed: the one that has been forgiven little loveth little – but the one that has been forgiven much loveth much. The wider our revelation of God’s Love for us; the wider our understanding of our depravity that His Grace saved us out of whilst we were yet sinners.
It’s not that the believer is sinless, but the sinner recognises sin, and mourns over their sin and turns to the Lord. The ungodly and the carnal will remain hard heartened at the back with their arms folded but some of the most sensitive to sin; godly men and women come forth weeping and penitent over their sin.
There’s no such thing as a great man or great woman of God: we are all weak and broken men before a Mighty and Merciful God
In today’s day and age where philosophy, psychology and psychiatry are dominating many narratives surrounding man’s sin and mental health; some will even argue that Jesus’ teaching to ‘give up on yourself and mourn over your fallenness’ will only put one into more misery; not true. You are actually put out of our your misery when you are told that ‘all are fallen’ (Rom 3:23); that ‘not one is righteous’ (Rom 3:10) and you are to repent of the biggest problem in your life which is your sinful heart (Job 14.1 & Jer 17.9) and to bow your knee, repent and put your faith in the Lord (Psalm 25:1). You are put out of your misery primarily because of who He is and what he DID for you on the cross – The Living & Loving Lord whose presence is a ‘fullness of joy’ (Psalm 16.11).
Evangelical Christians take heed: The nearing of the souls of friends and loved ones to the feet of Jesus Christ is more important than the preservation of your relationship with them.
<< Dear Lord; I humble myself before you. Teach me to be ‘poor in spirit’ before you on a regularly; not to put my trust in man but to become profoundly and joyfully dependant upon you daily >>
